How do I identify the artist's signature?

Signatures typically appear in the lower corners of the painted surface, executed in paint, ink, or pencil depending on the medium. Some historical works feature monograms or dates adjacent to the maker's hand. Comparison with documented examples from the same period helps confirm authenticity. Fading or partial obscuration can occur on older pieces exposed to light over decades.

Where should I hang these paintings?

These pieces suit rooms with stable humidity and indirect natural light to protect delicate watercolours and oil pigments from fading. Traditional studies, drawing rooms, and quiet hallways provide sympathetic settings. Wall fixings must match the substantial weight of framed oil paintings on canvas. Secure picture hooks fastened directly into wall studs ensure safe display for heavier giltwood frames.

How do I date a piece without a year?

Dating relies upon stylistic cues, clothing styles in portraits, and the physical characteristics of the paper, canvas, or wood panel. Framing techniques and backing materials also offer reliable chronological indicators. Comparative analysis against dated works by the same school or region narrows the period. Minor details such as stretcher construction help confirm the era of assembly.

Are watercolours more fragile than oils?

Watercolours on paper require protection behind glass and conservation-grade mounts to prevent airborne moisture and ultraviolet damage. Oil paintings on canvas possess greater resilience but remain sensitive to extreme temperature shifts. Direct sunlight damages both mediums over time, causing pigments to fade and paper to yellow. Careful placement away from windows preserves the integrity of the colours.
