What is a rococo fireplace guard?

A rococo fireplace guard is a decorative metal or textile screen placed before an active hearth to shield the room from sparks and ash. They combine nineteenth-century engineering with ornate, curving revival styles. Most examples employ brass, wire mesh, or gilt bronze to create intricate physical barriers. They range from simple folding fans to large stationary panels.

How do peacock fan screens work?

Peacock fan screens feature multiple overlapping metal blades that pivot open into a wide semicircular fan shape resembling a tail. When not in use, the blades fold inward compactly against a central spine. This folding mechanism made them space-saving accessories for nineteenth-century drawing rooms. They offered full hearth coverage when expanded and stored neatly during warmer months.

What materials are these guards made from?

The primary materials recorded in these listings are brass, wire mesh, gilt bronze, and ormolu. Some examples integrate carved oak or walnut frames housing wool tapestry panels. Metal components are typically cast and chased, whilst textile sections rely on hand-woven needlepoint. Gilt finishes provide the characteristic bright appearance of French revival pieces.

Are these guards adjustable?

Certain nineteenth-century fenders and screens include adjustable components to fit various hearth widths. Extending brass mechanisms allow the framework to span the fireplace opening precisely. Folding mesh screens also offer variable coverage depending on how far the panels are drawn out. This adaptability suited diverse Victorian and Edwardian domestic interiors.
