What is a period bedside cupboard?

A period bedside cupboard is an antique wooden storage piece designed for a bedroom, encompassing styles from the Georgian, Regency, and Victorian eras. These items range from pedestal cabinets and tray top commodes to cylindrical designs and small chests.

How do I care for antique wood?

Maintain antique timber furniture by placing it away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent wood splitting. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth preserves the polished surface. Avoid chemical polishes that can build up and dull the historic patination of the wood.

How do I identify a Georgian bedside cupboard?

Georgian cupboards are identified by characteristic timber choices like solid mahogany, classical proportions, and traditional joinery methods. Details such as tray tops, bracket feet, and brass hardware are common indicators. Consulting the listed period styles helps distinguish eighteenth-century forms from later nineteenth-century interpretations.
