Why were paintings created as pairs?

Artists and patrons commissioned or painted artworks in matched pairs to create visual balance on either side of a fireplace, doorway or piece of furniture. They frequently depicted contrasting themes such as sunrise and sunset, the four seasons, or portraits of a husband and wife.

How do I know if the frames are original?

Original frames show wear and patina consistent with the age of the canvases they enclose, often fitting the rabbet precisely without modern fixings. Signs of matching wood shrinkage, period joinery methods, and matching gilding wear help confirm the frame belongs to the painting.

Can I separate a pair of paintings?

Separating a pair diminishes their historical and decorative integrity, as they were conceived and executed as a single visual unit. Keeping them together preserves the artistic intent and the narrative connection between the two subjects.

How should I care for antique watercolours?

Watercolours on paper require protection from direct sunlight to prevent the pigments and paper from fading over time. Displaying them away from moisture sources and damp walls ensures the paper support and backing boards remain stable.
