What is a chevet table?

A chevet is a traditional French term for a bedside table or cabinet. These small pieces provide both a top surface and enclosed storage beside a bed. They emerged to hold chamber lamps, books and personal items during the night. Their compact scale allowed them to fit neatly into domestic bedchambers.

How do I identify Louis XV style?

Louis XV style furniture is characterised by curved lines, cabriole legs and organic rococo motifs. The forms avoid harsh angles in favour of flowing contours. Decoration often includes floral marquetry and restrained brass or ormolu mounts. This aesthetic experienced significant revival periods during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Are marble tops original?

Marble inserts on these cabinets were typically fitted during manufacture to provide a durable, wipe-clean surface for lamps and water jugs. Many period examples retain their original stone slabs. Matching the marble type to the period and regional workshop helps confirm authenticity. Belgian Sainte-Anne and white varieties appear frequently across the selection.

Where should I place a chevet in a modern room?

These compact cabinets function effectively as traditional bedside tables flanking a bed. Their modest footprint also suits small hallways or living rooms as accent tables. The enclosed cupboards and drawers offer practical storage for household items while maintaining a decorative silhouette.
