How do I protect painted iron outdoors?

Keep the metal surfaces clean and touch up any paint chips promptly to prevent moisture reaching the iron underneath. Store pieces under cover during harsh winter months to preserve the integrity of the paint and underlying metal.

Can these pieces stay outside all year?

Most cast and wrought iron items tolerate outdoor conditions well due to their heavy metal construction and protective coatings. However, pieces incorporating wood, timber, or marble elements benefit from sheltered placement or indoor storage during severe weather.

How do I distinguish Victorian from later pieces?

Victorian examples often display heavier cast frames with deep relief ornamentation such as foliage, ferns, or faux bois branches. Later twentieth-century versions tend towards simpler geometric forms or lighter patio settings associated with Art Deco or 1930s designs.

Are these items heavy to move?

Cast iron and wrought iron possess significant weight, making garden benches and tables solid and stable on uneven ground. Enlist assistance when relocating larger items like garden dining sets or console tables to avoid damaging the painted finish.
