How do I care for antique watercolours?

Watercolour paintings on paper require protection from direct sunlight to prevent the fading of delicate pigments. Framing behind conservation glass helps shield the paper from humidity and environmental pollutants. Keep these works in stable indoor environments away from damp walls and direct heat sources. Proper mounting with acid-free materials ensures the paper does not discolour or degrade over time.

What is a still life painting?

A still life depicts stationary objects, most commonly arrangements of cut flowers in vases, bowls of fruit, or household items. Artists arrange these elements to explore form, shadow, and colour relationships. In floral still life art, the subject ranges from loose wild roses to formal Dutch-style bouquets. This genre has remained popular across Victorian, Edwardian, and mid-century painting traditions.

How do I date an oil painting?

Dating an oil painting involves examining the style of the brushwork, the stretcher frames, the canvas preparation, and the framing materials. Signatures, dates inscribed on the reverse, and artist records provide direct confirmation of the period. Fashion trends in clothing, interior decor, and framing also offer clues for undated works. Comparative study against documented pieces by the same artist or school narrows the timeframe further.

Are original frames important for value?

Original frames that match the period of the artwork contribute historical context and aesthetic harmony. Gilt gesso frames from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries complement the traditional nature of floral oil paintings. While paintings can be re-framed to suit modern interiors, retaining the period setting preserves the integrity of the piece. Collectors generally prefer works that have remained in their initial frames.
