What were oak boxes with brass mounts used for?

These containers served varied domestic and travel purposes, from holding stationery, letters, and documents to storing cigars, wine decanters, and coal. Larger trunk versions transported personal belongings for travel, while smaller cabinets organised desks and smoking rooms in country houses.

How can I tell a Victorian box from an eighteenth century one?

Eighteenth century examples, such as mule chests and coffer bach pieces, often display hand-carved details, pegged frame construction, and simpler vernacular joinery. Victorian and Edwardian pieces frequently incorporate machine-sawn boards, tighter dovetails, mass-produced brass hardware, and specialised internal compartments for stationery or bottles.

How do I care for antique oak and brass?

Keep oak boxes away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to prevent the timber from splitting or warping. Apply a microcrystalline wax occasionally to feed the wood, and clean the brass mounts with a dry cloth rather than harsh liquid polishes.

Are brass mounts original to the boxes?

Most period pieces retain their original cast or sheet brass brackets, hinges, and lock plates, which show matching patination and screw types. Replacements usually present cleaner, brighter metal surfaces and unfilled screw holes underneath the hardware plates.
