What is a coffor bach?

A coffor bach is a Welsh miniature coffer, typically fashioned from oak during the eighteenth century. These small chests frequently incorporate one or two drawers beneath the main lidded section. They served as presentation pieces or dowry chests within domestic settings, offering secure storage for valuables on a table or dresser.

How were apprentice pieces used?

Apprentice pieces were created by woodworkers to demonstrate technical proficiency to master craftsmen. They miniaturise larger domestic furnishings such as sideboards and chests of drawers. These items allowed makers to practise complex joinery and carving techniques on a scale that conserved expensive timber.

What materials are common?

Oak and mahogany form the structural core of many English and Welsh pieces, whilst fruitwood and walnut appear in continental and later examples. Bone, brass, and slate provide decorative contrast. Makers selected timber based on local availability and the specific demands of miniature carving or inlay.

Dating relies on timber species, construction methods, and stylistic markers associated with the Georgian and Victorian periods. Secondary woods inside drawers often confirm the regional origin. Tool marks and wear patterns provide additional evidence of the era in which the box was constructed.
