How do I clean vintage silver?

Use a soft microfiber cloth and a mild silver polish specifically formulated for precious metals. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners that can damage delicate finishes or remove the fine details on planished surfaces. For pieces featuring enamel, wood, or glass components, take care to keep moisture away from vulnerable joints. Hand washing with gentle soap is recommended over immersion or mechanical dishwashing.

What is the difference between solid silver and silver plate?

Solid silver, typically sterling silver, consists of a consistent precious metal alloy throughout the entire object. These pieces carry hallmarks indicating their silver content and hold intrinsic metal value. Silver plate involves a thin layer of silver bonded to a base metal core, such as brass or copper. While plated items offer the aesthetic appeal of silver at a different scale, they can show base metal underneath if worn through heavy use.

Are these pieces suitable for daily use?

Many mid-century items, including barware, goblets, and flatware, were designed for functional entertaining and hold up well to careful handling. Sturdy solid silver tableware is robust enough for regular use when cleaned properly. Delicate jewellery, items with vitreous enamel, or pieces with organic inlays require more mindful treatment to prevent accidental scratching or chipping. Storing items in protective pouches helps maintain their condition over time.
