How do I wind a mechanical watch?

Turn the crown clockwise between your thumb and forefinger until you feel gentle resistance. Stop immediately once tension increases to avoid damaging the internal mainspring. Repeat this process daily for manual wind models to keep the movement operating accurately. Automatic versions require less frequent manual winding due to their self-winding rotors.

Are vintage watches waterproof?

Historical timepieces lack modern rubber seals and screw-down components designed to prevent moisture ingress. Exposure to water can rust delicate steel internal components and ruin paper dials. Keep these watches away from rain, swimming pools, and hand washing. Store them in dry environments to protect the leather straps and mechanical movements.

How do I clean a leather strap?

Wipe the surface gently with a dry or barely damp microfibre cloth to remove accumulated dust and oils. Avoid saturating the material with water or chemical solvents. Condition the hide periodically with dedicated leather care products to maintain flexibility. Replacement straps allow you to preserve original worn bands separately.

What is a bumper automatic movement?

An early self-winding mechanism where an internal weighted rotor swings back and forth through a limited arc rather than spinning in a full circle. Springs cushion the weight as it hits stops inside the case. Wearers feel a gentle physical tap on the wrist as the bumper moves. This technology represents a transitional phase in mid-century automatic watch engineering.
