What is a marble topped commode?

A marble topped commode is a decorative French chest of drawers or storage cabinet finished with a fitted stone slab on top. These pieces were built for formal bedrooms and reception rooms to hold linen or personal items. Cabinet makers used hardwoods like walnut, mahogany, and kingwood for the carcase, often applying elaborate veneers. The heavy stone surface provided a durable and elegant counter.

How do I style a marble topped commode?

Place a commode in a hallway, drawing room, or bedroom where the combination of timber and stone can anchor the space. The flat stone surface works well for lamps, vases, or decorative objects. Keep surrounding furniture balanced in scale, as these pieces carry considerable visual weight. Allow space around the commode so the veneer work and bronze mounts remain visible.

How do I date a marble topped commode?

Dating relies on identifying the underlying timber, the construction of the drawer carcase, and the decorative style. Eighteenth-century pieces display regional French characteristics and hand-cut joinery. Revival pieces from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries borrow heavily from Louis XV and Louis XVI aesthetics. Examining the internal linings and the casting quality of the ormolu mounts helps confirm the era of manufacture.

Are these commodes used as bedside tables?

Smaller versions and matched pairs function effectively as bedside cabinets or lamp tables. These compact forms retain the marble top and veneered drawer arrangement of larger case pieces. They offer enclosed storage beside a bed while maintaining a formal appearance. The stone top provides a practical surface for nighttime items.
