What is a combination wardrobe?

A combination wardrobe integrates hanging compartments with fitted drawers, shelves, or internal cupboards into a single piece of furniture. This design evolved to maximise storage in bedrooms by eliminating the need for a separate chest of drawers.

How do I date a mahogany wardrobe?

Dating relies on identifying stylistic periods, construction methods, and timber treatments such as flame mahogany or satinwood inlay. Georgian pieces often feature architectural cornices and linen presses, whereas Victorian and Edwardian examples frequently incorporate mirrored doors and combination drawer bases.

What is a linen press?

A linen press is a tall storage cabinet designed with internal sliding trays or shelves behind upper doors, paired with lower drawers. Historically used for storing folded linen and garments, these pieces predate modern hanging wardrobes.

Are these wardrobes easy to dismantle?

Many large wardrobes from the Victorian and Edwardian periods were built to be modular, allowing the cornice, base, and sides to separate. This modular construction enabled historical delivery and installation in rooms with low or standard doorways.
