A tallboy is a two-part storage piece where a slightly narrower chest sits atop a deeper base chest. This stacked configuration provides generous vertical storage. Historically, these pieces served bedrooms to house linens and garments while occupying minimal floor space compared to wide drawer units.

How do I date a tall chest?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, timber choice, handle styles and overall proportions. Georgian pieces often feature bracket feet and cockbeaded drawer edges. Victorian and Edwardian examples introduce different plinth bases, narrower locking bars and varied veneer selections that reflect changing interior fashions.

Where should I place a tall chest?

These pieces suit bedrooms, dressing rooms or hallways where vertical wall space allows high furniture without dominating the room. Their height makes them practical for storing bulkier clothing. Ensure placement accommodates the full extension of deep drawers and allows safe anchoring to the wall if the piece is exceptionally tall.

What is a Wellington chest?

A Wellington chest is a tall, slender set of drawers secured by a hinged wooden locking bar on one side. This locking mechanism keeps all contents private and secure. Originating in the nineteenth century, these pieces suit tight spaces where traditional wide chests cannot fit.
