What is a drum table?

A drum table is a round piece of furniture designed for libraries and studies, featuring a circular top and drawers arranged around the entire perimeter. These tables were originally used for storing documents and writing materials in the middle of a room, benefiting from a revolving mechanism on many examples.

How do I date a mahogany table?

Dating relies on observing the timber selection, construction methods, and stylistic details such as leg design and brass mounts. Georgian and Regency pieces generally display different proportions and veneer choices compared to Victorian or Edwardian revivals. Comparing the secondary woods inside the drawers and the style of the central pillar provides further chronological clues.

Where should I place a circular desk?

These pieces are intended to sit freestanding in the middle of a room because their drawers and finish extend all the way around the circumference. They function well in home studies, libraries, or large living spaces as central statement pieces. Positioning them away from walls allows the rotating top and all sides of the mahogany grain to be appreciated fully.

Did these tables always have leather tops?

Many examples feature a central inset of leather, often tooled with gold decoration, which provided a smooth surface for writing. Some variations relied purely on polished mahogany timber across the entire circular top without a leather insert.
