What is a mahogany bedroom washstand used for?

Historically, these stands provided a dedicated bedroom station for washing, shaving, and grooming before plumbed bathrooms became common. Today, they serve as versatile surface furniture in modern bedrooms, hallways, or bathrooms, utilising their drawers and shelves for storage.

How do I date a mahogany washstand?

Dating relies on observing structural characteristics, timber types, and decorative styles aligned with periods such as Georgian, Victorian, or Edwardian. Earlier pieces from the eighteenth century tend to feature simpler lines or folding tops, while later Victorian examples frequently incorporate marble tops and tiled splashbacks.

Did all washstands originally have marble tops?

Not all pieces included stone surfaces; early Georgian and nineteenth-century examples frequently relied entirely on solid timber tops with raised galleries. Marble and ceramic tops became increasingly popular during the Victorian and Edwardian periods to better withstand water splashes during daily use.
