How were large decorative trays used?

These large formats served various domestic functions, from carrying heavy meat platters and serving drinks to acting as permanent wall chargers and centrepieces. In many interiors, large metal and lacquered trays doubled as portable display surfaces for glassware and decanters when not mounted on walls.

How do I hang a heavy tray on the wall?

Displaying a heavy charger requires secure wall fixings and specialised spring clips or bracket mounts designed to distribute the weight evenly. Ensure the mounting hardware fastens directly into wall studs, particularly when dealing with dense copper, bronze, or large papier-mâché examples.

How do I care for antique silver plated trays?

Silver plated surfaces require gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and specialised polish to preserve the underlying base metal from exposure. Avoid abrasive agents that wear through the thin silver layer over the brass, copper, or Britannia metal core.
