How do I wire a vintage lamp?

Rewiring requires running modern flexible cable through the existing hollow channels and mounting a compatible lamp holder. Many pieces have already been adapted for contemporary electrical standards. It is advisable to have a qualified electrician inspect older metal fittings to ensure proper earthing and safety compliance before daily use.

What fuels did antique oil lamps use?

Earlier specimens burned whale oil, camphene, or paraffin within glass or metal reservoirs before later conversions to electricity. Wick mechanisms regulated the flame beneath glass chimneys. Today, these oil lamp conversions retain their original burners and fonts while housing concealed internal wiring for modern bulbs.

How do I clean antique brass?

Dusting with a dry microfibre cloth preserves the natural aged patina accumulated over decades. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip away historical surface colouring. If the metal requires deeper cleaning, use a mild soapy solution and dry thoroughly to prevent moisture damage to integrated fabric or glass.

Are these lamps heavy?

Solid brass, bronze, and glass construction results in considerable weight, particularly on monumental desk lamps and floor standards. This heft provides stability for large shades. Ensure that tables or wall brackets supporting these fixtures can bear the load safely without tipping or straining mounting surfaces.
