How do I care for a painting on board?

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and areas subject to sudden changes in temperature or humidity. Stable conditions prevent the wooden support from warping and protect the oil pigments from premature cracking. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid using liquid cleaners or moisture. If the frame requires attention, consult a professional conservator rather than attempting repairs at home.

Why did artists paint on board instead of canvas?

Boards provided a rigid, immediate surface that required minimal preparation and withstood the rigours of outdoor sketching. Artists working in the field appreciated the durability and portability of wooden panels. Solid supports also eliminated the need for canvas stretching and allowed painters to apply thick impasto without the surface flexing. This technique became especially popular among twentieth-century impressionists and modernists.

How can I date a landscape painting on board?

Examine the type of board, preparation grounds, and framing materials used for the backing, as manufacturing standards shifted significantly between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Handwritten inscriptions, signatures, or labels on the reverse often provide valuable clues. Compare the stylistic approach, clothing, or architecture depicted with known periods of artistic output. The handling of paint and the chosen palette also reflect the prevailing aesthetic of specific decades.

Are these paintings ready to hang?

Most pieces arrive with their historical or complementary frames fitted with hanging wire, allowing immediate placement on a wall. It is advisable to check the security of the fixings before mounting any artwork. Some collectors prefer to update or replace frames to suit modern interiors, though retaining original framing preserves the historical character of the piece.
