How do I care for rush seats?

Keep rush seating dry and avoid placing chairs in direct sunlight or overly damp environments, which can weaken the natural plant fibres. Clean gently with a dry brush to remove dust from the woven surface without introducing moisture that might rot the material.

Can I mix these with modern tables?

Ladder back chairs pair effectively with plain timber dining tables, where their simple frames contrast cleanly with modern minimalist designs. Their varied regional styles allow them to function as accent seating in contemporary spaces without dominating the room.

What is the difference between side chairs and carvers?

Side chairs are narrower designs built without armrests, allowing multiple pieces to tuck neatly along the sides of a dining table. Carvers include wooden arms attached to the frame, making them wider and more suitable for use at the ends of the table.

How do I distinguish regional chair styles?

English and American country chairs tend to feature heavy turned posts and rush seats, while French provincial examples often display curved Louis XV influence. Examining the turning profiles on the legs and the rake of the back slats reveals the specific vernacular tradition of the maker.
