How do I wire antique wall lights?

Most antique wall lights designed for candles can be adapted for electricity by running discreet internal wiring through the arms. Electrician assistance ensures the fittings meet modern safety standards while preserving the carved wooden structure. Original backplates and mounting brackets require careful handling during installation to support the weight of the timber and metal components securely against the wall.

Are these sconces sold as pairs?

Many wall lights and girandoles on this page are offered as matched pairs or larger sets. This reflects traditional interior placement where matching fixtures flanked mirrors, doorways, or fireplaces. Single items do appear, originating from larger displaced sets or specific architectural niches where only one sconce was required.

What is the difference between Florentine and Baroque styles?

Florentine styles emphasise rich leaf motifs, scrollwork, and textured giltwood surfaces typical of workshops in Florence. Baroque designs focus on dramatic movement, deep carving, and monumental forms. Overlapping elements frequently occur, such as Florentine Baroque pieces that combine regional decorative traits with grand theatrical proportions.

How do I clean gilded wood sconces?

Gilded surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft dry brush to remove particles without disturbing the delicate leaf. Moisture and modern chemical cleaners will damage historic gesso and gold leaf. Professional conservation is recommended for pieces showing active flaking or structural instability in the wooden carvings.
