What periods do these officer portraits cover?

The works span from the seventeenth century through the Victorian era and into the twentieth century. They document military figures across numerous decades and historical campaigns. Earlier examples feature seventeenth-century Anglo-Dutch and Flemish subjects, while later pieces extend through the Georgian, Regency, and Victorian periods.

How should I hang heavy oil paintings?

Heavy oil portraits on canvas require secure fixings anchored directly into wall studs or masonry. Using picture wire rated well above the weight of the frame ensures stability. Positioning the canvas away from direct sunlight and heat sources protects both the oil paint and the wooden frame from degradation over time.

Are these portraits original period works?

The selection includes authentic period oil paintings and engravings created during the lifetimes of the subjects or shortly thereafter. Each listing specifies the century or estimated date of execution. Provenance and stylistic evidence help identify the specific artistic school and historical context of each individual portrait.

What is the difference between an oil painting and an engraving?

An oil painting is a unique handmade work created by applying pigmented oils directly onto canvas or wood. Each brushstroke is singular to the artist's hand. An engraving is a printed work produced from an etched metal plate, allowing multiple impressions of the same military subject to be distributed.
