How do I clean a brass storage trunk?

Dust the exterior regularly with a dry cloth and apply a suitable wax to nourish the timber surface. Polish the brass fittings sparingly using a gentle cleaner, taking care not to stain the surrounding wood.

Were these trunks meant for travel?

Many examples originated as campaign or travelling chests designed for military officers and merchants on long journeys. Their robust construction of hardwood and metal banding ensured contents remained secure across land and sea.

How can I date an old trunk?

Examine the construction methods, nail types and secondary woods used in the interior compartments. Stylistic markers like Victorian brass binding or Georgian joinery help narrow down the period of manufacture.

What woods were commonly used?

Carpenters frequently employed dense hardwoods such as teak, oak and camphor wood for durability. Camphor was particularly favoured for blanket boxes because its natural scent repelled moths and insects.
