What is a green nephrite carving?

A green nephrite carving is a sculptural object shaped from tough amphibole stone by traditional artisans. These pieces take the form of animals, ritual vessels, and landscape scenes. Most examples originate from Chinese traditions spanning the eighteenth century through the Republic Period. They range from small pocket pendants to substantial desk ornaments.

How were these carvings used?

Many items served as scholarly accessories on scholar tables, including brush washers, lotus cups, and head rests. Other pieces functioned as personal amulets or decorative ornaments. Figural sculptures of animals and mythical beasts often carried symbolic meanings intended to bring good fortune or auspicious luck.

How do I date a green nephrite carving?

Dating relies on stylistic markers such as Qing Dynasty imperial designs, archaistic bronze motifs, or later Republic Period carving conventions. Material tones and tool marks also help establish the era. Comparing the sculptural depth and surface polish against documented period pieces provides further context for the age of an item.

How should I care for nephrite jade?

Nephrite is an exceptionally tough mineral that tolerates handling well, but it benefits from gentle cleaning with soft cloths. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that might affect any fitted hardwood stands. Displaying pieces away from sudden temperature shifts helps protect both the stone and associated wooden components over time.
