What is a golden walnut occasional table?

A golden walnut occasional table is a small, movable piece of furniture utilised for display, serving, or holding lamps. These tables showcase the rich, warm tones and swirling grain patterns characteristic of walnut timber. They appear in various forms across this selection, including tripod lamp tables, coffee tables, and compact side tables suitable for placement beside seating.

How do I date a walnut occasional table?

Dating relies on observing stylistic markers, construction methods, and materials recorded across different eras. Victorian pieces often feature elaborate marquetry or shaped burr walnut tops, whereas 1930s examples lean towards Art Deco or modernist tiered designs. Cabinetmaking techniques and edge profiles also shift over the decades, helping to separate mid-nineteenth-century items from early twentieth-century interpretations.

Where should I place an occasional table?

An occasional table suits placement beside sofas, armchairs, or in corners where extra surface space is beneficial. Their compact proportions allow them to move easily around a room as needs change. Lamp tables work effectively beside seating, while larger centre tables anchor the middle of a room or serve as display points for decorative objects.

How do I care for burr walnut veneer?

Burr walnut veneer requires protection from direct sunlight and excessive heat sources to prevent timber drying and veneer lifting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished surface. Occasional application of appropriate wax polish maintains the golden lustre of the timber without building up heavy residues.
