How do I install antique wall sconces safely?

Professional installation by a qualified electrician ensures that older wiring or converted candle brackets meet modern safety regulations. Secure mounting to wall studs supports the weight of cast bronze and gilded brass fixtures without damaging plaster.

What is the difference between ormolu and gilt brass?

Ormolu specifically describes high-status gilded bronze created through mercury amalgamation on a cast bronze foundation. Gilt brass utilises a different base alloy and finishing process, resulting in distinct weight and surface characteristics. Both materials achieve a bright gold appearance, but ormolu typically exhibits sharper detail from the initial casting.

Can these lights be wired for electricity?

Many antique fixtures were originally designed for candles and have been adapted for electrical use during their long lifespan. Surviving components often retain their original socket configurations or branch arrangements alongside discreet modern wiring. Checking the internal channeling helps determine how cleanly the conversion was executed.

How should I clean gilded metal surfaces?

Dusting gently with a soft, dry brush prevents the accumulation of grime without disturbing fragile gold leaf or patinated bronze. Liquid cleaners and abrasive cloths strip away historical finishes and must be avoided. Preserving the existing surface maintains the character developed over centuries of use.
