What is a gold pearl heart pendant?

A gold pearl heart pendant is a decorative item of jewellery shaped like a heart, made from gold and embellished with pearls. These pieces often incorporate additional gemstones such as amethyst, turquoise or diamonds. Such items were historically created as tokens of affection during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Today, they remain collectible items worn on chains or ribbons.

How do I date a gold pearl heart pendant?

Dating these pendants involves examining the materials, construction methods and stylistic markers present in the piece. Victorian examples often utilise high carat yellow gold and seed pearls, whilst Edwardian pieces frequently feature lighter yellow gold, platinum accents or guilloche enamel. Reference to specific gemstone combinations, such as turquoise with seed pearls or double heart configurations, helps place pieces within the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.

How were these pendants worn historically?

Victorian and Edwardian wearers suspended these heart pendants from thin gold chains, ribbons or velvet bands around the neck. Some versions also functioned as brooches, featuring pin fittings on the reverse alongside suspension loops. Many contained small interior compartments behind glass panels designed to hold locks of hair or miniature photographs as sentimental mementos.

How should I care for an antique heart pendant?

Care requires gentle handling due to the delicate nature of seed pearls and historical gold settings. Avoid submerging pearl jewellery in liquid cleaners, as moisture can weaken the traditional adhesives or silk threads used in period construction. Store the pendant separately in a soft pouch to prevent scratching against other items in your collection.
