How do I clean antique brass and gilt metal lights?

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to remove accumulated particles without disturbing the finish. Avoid chemical polishes or abrasive cleaners, as these substances can strip away thin layers of gilding or antique patination permanently.

Were these chandeliers and wall lights electrified originally?

Most pieces dating from the 18th and 19th centuries were designed exclusively for candles and were subsequently converted to electricity during the 20th century. When acquiring historic lighting, have a qualified electrician inspect and update the internal wiring to ensure safety and compliance with current standards.

How can I tell French styles apart from English pieces?

French fixtures frequently display exuberant Rococo or Neoclassical ornamentation, incorporating gilt bronze, cascading crystal drops, and figural motifs such as cherubs or birds. English designs from periods like the Regency or Georgian eras tend to emphasise geometric balance, clean lines, and restrained brass or ormolu casting.

How do I hang a heavy antique chandelier safely?

Support the weight of the fixture directly from a ceiling joist or structural beam using an appropriate metal hook and bracket system rather than relying on plaster. Consult a professional installer to verify that the ceiling box and wiring can bear the combined weight of the metal frame and crystal elements.
