How do I wire old wall appliques?

Most antique wall appliques were originally designed for candles and require careful conversion by a qualified electrician to accept modern internal wiring. Electricians typically route slender flex through the existing mounting plate or hollow arms without compromising the structural integrity of the metalwork. Buyers should discuss sleeve styles and bulb types with their lighting specialist to ensure the illumination matches the period character of the gilded brass or bronze.

Where should I place wall sconces?

Wall sconces perform best when mounted at eye level in hallways, flanking a fireplace, or framing a large mirror in a reception room. Their reflective gilded surfaces bounce natural and artificial light around the space, creating ambient illumination. Consider the scale of the room and the height of the ceilings when choosing between single-branch fixtures and larger sets of twin or triple-arm lights.

How do I tell Louis XVI style from Rococo?

Louis XVI wall lights display neoclassical symmetry, straight lines, architectural urns, and ribbons, reflecting a return to classical antiquity. Rococo appliques favour asymmetrical designs, sweeping C-scrolls, and exuberant naturalistic foliage. Examining the cast motifs on the backplate usually reveals which decorative vocabulary the maker followed.

Are these pieces made of solid brass?

Many wall lights on this page utilise cast brass or bronze as a base metal, which is then gilded or finished with ormolu to achieve a gold appearance. Solid cast bronze provides the heavy weight and durability seen in finer French examples. Gilded brass offers a slightly lighter alternative while maintaining the traditional golden lustre expected from period appliques.
