How do I care for a giltwood surface?

Dust the carved wooden frame gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to prevent the accumulation of grit in the recesses. Avoid all liquid cleaners, polishes, and abrasive materials that can lift or dull the delicate gold leaf. Keep the sofa away from direct sunlight and fluctuating radiator heat to prevent the underlying wood from shrinking and cracking the gesso layer. Professional conservationists should handle any structural repairs or re-gilding requirements.

Where should I place a giltwood settee?

These decorative seats suit formal drawing rooms, large entry halls, or master bedrooms where their sculptural frames act as a focal point. Position them away from heavy traffic zones to protect the delicate carved wooden projections and fine upholstery fabrics. Pairing the settee with complementary giltwood console tables or matching salon chairs creates a cohesive interior scheme. Ensure the room humidity remains stable to protect both the wooden structure and the fabric.

Are these sofas comfortable for daily lounging?

Antiques from this category were built for formal entertaining and upright posture rather than deep, casual slouching. The seats often feature firm traditional stuffing and upright backs designed to support formal attire. Comfort levels vary depending on whether the upholstery retains its original interior springing or has been rebuilt with modern supportive webbing. Adding supportive cushions can improve daily usability without altering the historical frame.
