A fauteuil is an open-arm chair featuring upholstered armrests, back and seat supported by an exposed wooden frame. These pieces were designed for formal reception rooms during various French historical periods.

How do I identify Louis XVI style?

Louis XVI style is marked by straight tapered legs, fluting and classical geometric or architectural motifs. Unlike curved Rococo designs, these frames favour symmetry and rectangular or oval backrests.

Where should I place these chairs?

These chairs function well as accent seating in living rooms, bedrooms, or hallways where visual impact is desired. They pair effectively with traditional interiors or serve as a contrasting focal point in modern spaces.

Are these chairs comfortable for daily use?

Comfort varies depending on the specific form, seat depth and whether the piece is a padded armchair or a rigid side chair. Upholstered lounge chairs and bergères offer softer seating, whereas salon and side chairs are traditionally firmer.
