How were these wall lights originally used?

These sconces were mounted on drawing room and hallway walls to hold wax candles, providing functional illumination before the widespread adoption of gas and electric lighting. The polished metal surfaces and accompanying mirrors were positioned strategically to reflect and amplify the flickering candle flames across the interior space.

Can antique sconces be wired for electricity?

Many surviving examples have already been adapted for modern electrical wiring while retaining their original candle tubes and sockets. Buyers frequently choose to install modern internal wiring through the hollow bronze arms so the fixtures can function safely as wall lamps.

How do I identify a Rococo sconce?

Rococo pieces feature asymmetric designs, scrolling leaf motifs, C-scrolls, and naturalistic shell forms rather than rigid geometric lines. This exuberant French style focuses on flowing curves and organic plant structures rather than the straight columns typical of Neoclassical pieces.

What is the difference between brass and ormolu?

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc with a natural yellowish metallic colour that develops a darker patina over time. Ormolu is a specific gold-gilding technique applied over a bronze base, providing a much richer and more permanent golden finish.
