How do I date a gilt wood frame?

Dating relies on examining the construction of the wooden corners, the composition of the gesso, and the tools marks left by the maker. Earlier frames often feature heavier hand-carved wooden profiles. Matching the style of the frame to the period of the canvas offers further clues, though frames and artworks were frequently paired together at later dates.

Where should I hang these pieces?

These works suit traditional living spaces, studies, or hallways where natural light can catch the metallic gold leaf surfaces. Ensure they hang away from direct sunlight and damp walls to protect both the canvas and the wooden surround. Pairing a deep gilt frame with neutral wall colours allows the intricate woodwork and the painting inside to stand out visually.

Are the frames original to the art?

Many pieces retain their period frames, while others have been paired with suitable historic surrounds over the centuries. Examining the fit at the back helps determine if the artwork and frame have a long association. Both contemporaneous pairings and later historic matches contribute to the overall character of the piece.

How do I clean gilt wood frames?

Dusting requires a soft, dry brush to remove particles from the crevices of the carved gesso without disturbing the gold leaf. Avoid using water, liquid cleaners, or chemical solvents on gilded surfaces. Professional conservators should handle any repairs to flaking gesso or damaged wooden moulding to preserve the historic finish.
