Where should I place a console table?

These tables suit hallways, drawing rooms, or entryways where wall space allows for a shallow yet decorative surface. They often anchor a room when paired with a matching wall mirror positioned directly above. Because of their wall-fixed nature, many nineteenth-century examples require proper securing to the wall for stability, particularly when supporting heavy marble slabs.

How do I identify a Neoclassical console?

Neoclassical examples feature straighter architectural lines, symmetrical ornament, and classical motifs inspired by antiquity, distinguishing them from curved Rococo designs. Look for restrained fluted legs, carved paterae, and rectilinear marble tops dating from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries.

Are these tables designed to stand alone?

Traditional console tables rely on the wall for balance and physical support, meaning they cannot stand freely without attachment. Wall brackets function similarly by anchoring directly to the plaster. Side tables and card tables within the selection possess four freestanding legs and do not require wall mounting.

What is parcel gilt furniture?

Parcel gilt describes pieces where only specific carved details, mouldings, or raised elements are highlighted with gold leaf against a painted or polished wood background. This technique creates contrast between the underlying wood colour, such as black paint or walnut, and the reflective gilded highlights.
