How do I hang a heavy gilt mirror with sconces?

Due to the substantial weight of the wooden frames, gesso, and metal candle branches, these pieces require secure wall fixings anchored directly into structural studs or masonry. Professional installation using rated mirror plates ensures the weight distributes evenly without straining the antique frame or the wall surface.

Were the candle sconces always made for these mirrors?

The integrated sconces on girandoles and wall lights are generally original to the piece, engineered to complement the design and weight distribution of the frame. Makers deliberately positioned the candle arms to maximise the illumination reflecting from the glass plate.

How should I clean antique giltwood and mirror glass?

Dust giltwood surfaces gently with a soft, dry brush, avoiding any moisture or chemical cleaning agents that could lift the delicate gold leaf. Use a minimal amount of glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than the glass directly, preventing liquid from seeping behind the silvered plate.

Can I safely burn candles in the sconces?

While the brass and ormolu branches are built to hold candles, modern use typically favors unlit tapers to protect the surrounding antique frame from soot and heat damage. If you choose to light them, keep drips to a minimum and monitor the flame distance from the glass and gilding.
