Were these plates used for dining?

Many examples from dessert services were indeed utilised for serving fruit and sweetmeats at the conclusion of formal meals. However, pieces described as cabinet plates were made strictly for visual display. Examining the centre of the plate for cutlery scratches helps determine whether an item saw active service or spent its life in a cabinet.

How can I date an unmarked plate?

Dating relies on observing the characteristics of the ceramic body, the style of the hand-painted decoration, and any impressed factory numbers on the reverse. Comparing the floral palette or border design to documented factory patterns provides a reliable window of manufacture. Consulting reference guides on nineteenth-century pottery marks assists in narrowing down the decade of production.

What causes the gold to wear off?

Frequent washing, abrasive cleaning agents, and normal friction from stacking plates over generations cause the surface gilding to thin and fade. Hand-applied gold leaf from earlier centuries is particularly susceptible to rubbing if handled roughly. Preserved pieces usually owe their bright metallic finish to careful storage away from daily use.
