These pieces, known as a gilded gesso frame mirror, combine carved wooden foundations with moulded ornament to reflect light and shape a room.
Some nineteenth-century makers incorporated hidden wooden lugs inside the frame back to keep the heavy glass snugly wedged against shifting gesso.
