What is a carver chair used for?

Carver chairs function primarily as head-of-table seating in dining rooms or as dedicated armchairs in libraries and studies. Their integrated armrests provide additional support compared to standard side chairs. Buyers often select them to anchor a set of dining chairs or to serve as standalone desk chairs.

How do I identify Chippendale style?

Chippendale style pieces feature characteristic carved wooden details, elaborate back splats, and sturdy legs terminating in ball-and-claw or straight block feet. The design draws from eighteenth-century cabinet making manuals. Revival versions produced in later centuries replicate these ornate decorative elements using solid mahogany.

What wood was used for these chairs?

Cabinet makers utilised solid mahogany and walnut as the primary woods for constructing these frames. These dense hardwoods allowed for intricate carving on the backs and arms. Dark timber tones predominate across both the nineteenth-century examples and the twentieth-century revival pieces.

Are these chairs antique or reproduction?

The selection includes genuine nineteenth-century pieces alongside revival pieces dating from nineteen hundred, nineteen twenty, and nineteen thirty. Each era reflects contemporary interpretations of historical British design. Makers during the early twentieth century meticulously copied earlier Georgian forms using traditional joinery methods.
