What is a pot cupboard?

A pot cupboard is a small enclosed bedside cabinet created to hold a chamber pot out of sight. They date primarily from the Georgian period onward. Today these cabinets function as practical bedside tables that coordinate in pairs on either side of a bed.

How do I spot a revival piece?

Revival pieces date from later eras like the early 20th century while imitating 18th century styles. They often utilise satinwood or specific inlay patterns popular during revival movements. Examining the timber ageing, interior construction methods and secondary woods helps differentiate original 18th century cabinets from later interpretations.

Are matching pairs common?

Finding a matched pair requires locating two cabinets with identical dimensions, timber grain and hardware. Many period examples began as single units that dealers or previous owners subsequently matched. True pairs manufactured together display consistent wear patterns and identical interior construction details across both pieces.

Where should I place them?

These cupboards suit bedrooms as symmetrical bedside tables flanking a bed. Their enclosed storage keeps personal items concealed. They also function as small side tables or lamp stands in living spaces where surface area and enclosed storage are both required.
