How do I use a tilt top table today?

These tables function well as occasional surfaces for drinks or books in a living room. When tipped upright, they act as decorative wall panels that display the timber grain. Their modest footprint allows them to fit easily into corners or tight spaces between armchairs.

What is a birdcage mechanism?

The birdcage is a small wooden assembly fixed beneath the table top. It consists of two parallel discs connected by short spindles that permit the top to spin horizontally. A wooden wedge or catch secures the platform when lowered into the flat position.

How do I distinguish George III from Regency pieces?

George III tables, dating from the late eighteenth century, often feature slender tripod legs and carved details like pie crust edges. Regency pieces from the early nineteenth century tend toward bolder pedestals and brass fittings. Timber selection also shifts, with Regency examples frequently displaying rich flame mahogany veneers.

Are these tables sturdy enough for daily use?

The three-legged tripod design provides natural stability on level floorboards. Solid mahogany construction ensures durability across centuries of domestic service. Care should be taken when operating the tilting mechanism to support the weight of the top.
