How do I dismantle a large armoire?

Many large wardrobes use knock-down construction with pegged joints or wedges. This allows the cornice, sides, and base to separate for transport. Mark each component carefully during disassembly to ensure correct reassembly in the bedroom.

Are these wardrobes deep enough for modern hangers?

Earlier European wardrobes sometimes feature shallow internal depths due to historical coat sizes. Modern padded hangers may prevent the doors from closing fully. Check the internal depth measurements before purchase if you intend to hang modern garments front-to-back.

How do I clean the original mirror glass?

Use a soft microfibre cloth with a mild glass cleaner applied to the cloth rather than directly to the mirror. This prevents moisture from seeping behind the antique silvering. Take care around the wooden rebate and any gilt bronze mounts to avoid chemical damage.

Can I adjust the internal shelves?

Period wardrobes often feature fixed wooden shelf supports or simple wooden notches rather than modern adjustable metal tracks. Altering the internal configuration generally requires professional joinery work. Many pieces offer modular hanging spaces that can accept custom rails if needed.
