What is a cabriole leg?

A cabriole leg is a curved support that bows outward at the knee and tapers inward to an ankle or foot. This structural shape provides stability while offering an organic, flowing silhouette. Craftsmen carved these legs directly from solid timber like walnut or mahogany, often finishing them with scroll or pad feet.

How do I identify Louis XV style chairs?

Louis XV style chairs show prominent curved lines, asymmetrical floral carvings, and sweeping cabriole legs without straight structural lines. The frames typically feature moulded woodwork in walnut, giltwood, or painted finishes. These chairs date from the original period or appear as nineteenth-century revivals imitating the distinctive rococo aesthetic.

Where were these chairs used historically?

These seating pieces served in formal salons, withdrawing rooms, and bedrooms of grand residences. Armchairs and bergeres provided comfortable seating for conversation and reading. Smaller side chairs and salon chairs were easily moved around rooms to accommodate guests during social gatherings.

Are these chairs suitable for daily use?

Many of these chairs function well in contemporary homes when placed with care in low-traffic areas. Their solid timber frames offer robust support for seating. Buyers often assess the internal webbing and upholstery condition to ensure the piece meets modern comfort preferences.
