How do I hang a heavy oil painting?

Secure the frame using appropriate wall fixings that match the weight of both the canvas and its wooden surround. Ensure the hanging wire or brackets engage firmly with wall studs or robust masonry anchors. Position the centre of the artwork at eye level to achieve balanced proportions within your room. Keep pieces away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to protect the pigments.

Can I remove the frame?

The frame protects the canvas edges and structural stretcher bars, so removal alters the historical integrity of the piece. Most antique paintings are designed to be viewed within their original or period housing. Altering the presentation risks damaging the delicate gesso mouldings or the margins of the canvas. Consult a professional restorer if the surround requires cleaning or stabilization.

How do I clean an antique canvas?

Dust the surface very gently using a soft, dry brush without applying downward pressure. Avoid using water, household cleaners or damp cloths on painted oil surfaces. Professional conservators handle deep cleaning, varnish removal and canvas repairs. Attempting DIY cleaning can strip original glazes and pigments from the painting.

What is the Barbizon School?

The Barbizon school refers to a collective of French landscape painters working mid-century near the forest of Fontainebleau. They rejected academic convention in favor of direct observation of nature. Their atmospheric canvases bridge the gap between romanticism and impressionism. Look for moody skies, rural laborers and rendered woodland textures in these works.
