How do I clean a framed oil painting?

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush to remove loose particles. Avoid using water or chemical cleaners on the paint or the gilt frame. Professional conservators should handle deeper cleaning or varnish removal. Keeping the artwork away from direct sunlight preserves the original pigments.

Where should I hang a cityscape?

Select an interior wall with stable temperature and humidity levels away from direct heat sources. Good ambient lighting enhances the details of the architecture and the texture of the paint. Ensure the hanging fixings match the weight of the wooden frame. Positioning the centre of the piece at eye level offers the best viewing angle.

How do I identify the period?

Examine the materials of the canvas, stretcher bars, and the construction of the frame. Nail types and backing boards often provide clues to the age of the piece. Stylistic elements like architectural fashions and clothing worn by figures help narrow down the date. Signatures, when present, allow research into the active years of the artist.

Are these works original or prints?

The inventory includes both unique hand-painted works and printed or engraved editions. Close inspection under magnification reveals the brush texture of oils or the dot patterns of print processes. Watercolours and drawings show individual pencil lines and pigment pooling unique to hand creation. Listings specify whether a work is an original oil, watercolour, or engraved print.
