How do I choose the right size?

Consider both the floor area and the ceiling height of your bedroom before selecting a frame. Many historical pieces are built to specific antique dimensions rather than modern standard mattress sizes. Account for the vertical clearance needed for the tester canopy. Measure doorways and stairwells to ensure the long posts and headboards can maneuver into the intended room.

How do I date an antique frame?

Dating relies on identifying the primary wood species, construction joinery, and stylistic details of the posts and headboard. Seventeenth-century examples typically use heavy carved oak with pegged joints, while Georgian and Victorian versions favor mahogany or brass. Maker marks, distinctive turning patterns, and documented design influences like Sheraton or Regency provide further chronological markers. Compare the decorative motifs against known periods to narrow the timeframe.

Do these beds require special mattresses?

Many antique four poster frames were built for custom dimensions that differ from contemporary standard mattress sizes. You may need a bespoke mattress made to fit the exact interior dimensions of the wooden or iron rails. Check the support slats or base structure within the frame to ensure modern box springs or mattress bases will fit securely. Some older frames require additional wooden supports or upholstery foundations.
