How do I use a folding guard?

Expand the hinged sections across the hearth opening before lighting a fire to contain sparks and ash effectively. Fold the panels flat or close the fan blades together when the fireplace is cold to save floor space in the room.

Are these guards safe for modern fires?

These historical pieces work well with open solid-fuel hearths, provided the mesh or panels remain intact and stable. Check that the folding base sits level on the hearth stone so the guard cannot easily tip forward.

How do I clean brass guards?

Dust the metal surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth to prevent soot accumulation and grime buildup. Avoid harsh chemical abrasives that strip historic patina, opting instead for mild soapy water on stubborn marks.

What periods do these pieces span?

The available selection covers items manufactured from the nineteenth century through the early twentieth century. Common design eras represented include Victorian, Edwardian, and various French revival movements.
