What periods do these paintings come from?

The selection includes works from the nineteenth century alongside pieces created across several decades of the twentieth century. Artists working in these periods drew on various historical traditions ranging from Dutch Golden Age styles to mid-century impressionism. Each era brought distinct approaches to colouration and brushwork, reflecting the shifting tastes of European art markets over two centuries.

How should I care for an oil painting on canvas?

Keep canvases away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent the oil paint and support from degrading over time. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush without applying pressure to the impasto. Ensure the room maintains a stable climate so the canvas does not slacken or tighten excessively on its stretcher bars.

What is the difference between oil and tempera?

Oil paint uses a drying oil binder that allows for slow blending, rich luminous layers, and thick impasto textures. Tempera dries rapidly with an egg or plant-based binder, yielding a flat, matte surface suited to precise detail. Both mediums offer distinct visual textures when applied to canvas or wood panel supports.
