What is an english lowboy used for?

Historically, these tables served as compact dressing tables for bedrooms or writing surfaces for correspondence and household accounts. Today, their modest dimensions allow them to function as side tables, hall tables, or lamp stands in compact spaces.

How do I tell an 18th century lowboy from a later copy?

Examine the construction methods inside the drawers and under the top, looking for hand-cut joints and timber shrinkage appropriate to age. Original hardware impressions and uneven hand-planed boards also distinguish period examples from Edwardian or later twentieth-century revivals.

What is the difference between a lowboy and a side table?

While the terms frequently overlap in historical listings, a lowboy specifically incorporates one or more drawers beneath the surface. Plain side tables may lack drawers entirely, functioning strictly as flat surface furniture for display or serving.

Where should I place a lowboy in my home?

Their shallow depth makes them well-suited for narrow hallways, reception rooms, or landings where large furniture would obstruct movement. They also pair effectively beneath a mirror in a bedroom or as a compact writing desk against a living room wall.
