What defines an Edwardian salon suite?

An Edwardian salon suite consists of a matching set of upholstered seating, typically featuring a settee paired with armchairs. These groups were designed to furnish formal reception rooms with a unified aesthetic. The woodwork often displays light mahogany frames with satinwood inlay and revival carved details, reflecting the refined tastes of the period.

How do I care for antique upholstery?

Antique upholstery requires gentle maintenance to preserve fragile textiles and traditional horsehair or sprung foundations. Regular light vacuuming with a soft attachment prevents dust accumulation in the fabric pile. Keep these pieces away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect the wood finish and prevent the textile colours from fading.

Are these suites suitable for daily use?

While these seating arrangements were built for formal entertaining, many survive in sturdy condition for modern living spaces. The structural strength depends on the hardwood frame and the quality of any restoration work. Buyers planning for heavy daily seating should inspect the internal sprung bases and joints for stability.

What is the difference between a salon suite and a parlour suite?

Salon suites and parlour suites both offer coordinated seating for entertaining guests, but parlour suites traditionally lean towards Victorian comforts. Parlour suites often feature darker walnut frames and heavier upholstery. Salon suites tend to exhibit lighter Edwardian mahogany frames, painted satinwood, or caned panels designed for brighter drawing rooms.
