How do I date an edwardian lady oil portrait?

Examine the clothing, hairstyle, and framing materials for clues characteristic of the period between the late Victorian era and the First World War. Fashion details such as large hats, lace collars, and specific silhouettes often provide a reliable timeframe. Signatures, dates inscribed on the reverse, and the construction of the stretcher or frame also offer concrete evidence for dating the artwork.

Were these portraits painted from life?

Many formal portraits were commissioned and painted from live sittings in an artist's studio, requiring multiple sessions. Other works, particularly sketches or posthumous memorials, relied on photographic references or earlier academic studies. The level of detail in the facial expression and fabric usually indicates whether the artist worked directly with the sitter present.

How should I hang and light an oil painting?

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations to protect the canvas and the oil pigments. Stable indoor environments prevent the wood stretcher and canvas from warping. Use dedicated picture lights with low heat emission, such as modern LED fixtures, to illuminate the surface without damaging the delicate layers of paint and varnish.

What is the difference between canvas and board supports?

Canvas provides a slightly springy surface woven from textile fibres, which responds to tension from the wooden stretcher behind it. Board offers a completely rigid ground made from wood or compressed material, preventing any flexing of the paint layer. Both supports were common during the period, with board often utilised for quicker sketches or smaller portrait studies.
